Murik Lakes, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea

A powerful Murik Lakes ancestor figure. Brilliantly carved from hard wood, with an almost alien like elongated body. The long narrow arms with intricately carved hands are holding a spear in one, and a scoop in the other, while the features on the classic Murik masked face are raised, the ears pierced for attachments. There are traces of pigment in places, however it has mostly worn away. Weathered varied patina, with evident loss to the left leg. In overall excellent condition. Mid 20th Century.
