A small beautifully carved Massim canoe prow. Hard wood, and highly decorated with incised abstract motif, the centre containing two opposed frigate birds, while on the top there is a carved cowrie shell, one of our favourite features of this piece. Weathered from time at sea; in excellent condition. Mounted on a steel display stand. Pre 1950′s.

A Massim circular pigs tusk. Highly valued amongst the Massim people as a form of traditional trade currency. This is a great example, with a smooth patina on the inside of the tusk from being worn around the wrist as an adornment. Mounted on a custom steel display stand.

Old Kwoma Dance Wand “Wamboi” – bf684

A Kwoma dance wand in the shape of a birds head known in the Kwoma language as a “Wamboi”. These ceremonial objects are used as a dance wand but also as a handle of a kind of ladle for making sago but attaching a coconut bowl to the bound section at the base. Decorated with raised and incised motif on the stem and traces of “trade” pigments. Weathered and encrusted patina, with a couple of stable age splits in fine condition. Mounted on a steel display stand.

Exhibited in the Melbourne Museum November 2006.

A large old sawtooth bill “Anoxypristis cuspidata”. 29 rows of teeth in excellent condition. A fine Massim Canoe tip. In all its glory with prow and splashboard held in place by tight bush string binding. Decorated with vibrant “trade” pigments, the tip and prow covered in incised and raised abstract motif, with two figures at the top centre. Weathered patina from time at sea, with evidence of old pests, which are no longer present. In excellent condition. Circa Mid 20th Century. Mounted on a steel display stand

Abelam Yua Currency Disc – bf674

An ancient Abelam Yua currency disc. Carved from a section of giant clam shell “tridacna gigus”; using a complicated grinding technique involving a sand and bamboo grinder; before being polished for use. Traditionally used as currency in bride price payments throughout the Abelam region. Incised linear motif representing a hornbill beak adorn the top section; with the later addition of red cotton fibre. Mounted on a steel display stand. Circa 19th century or earlier. Diameter: 17 cm or 6.75 inches
