An impressive larger Abelam female ancestor figure. Known as a “Yuwibasari” this figure is said to represent women and their contribution towards the Yam planting and harvesting. Carved with great form, and decorated with natural pigments, shell earrings through pierced ears, and human hair attached to the head and genital area. Although not an ancient figure, most likely being carved in the 1980’s; she has fantastic traditional decoration; pierced ears and septum; which you usually only find on older sculpture. A fine looking figure in excellent condition. Mounted on a custom steel display stand.

A Kwoma Mindja figure. Carved from hard dense wood in stout form, with a large expressive face, bearing an opened mouth and cut out eyes. Beautiful muted natural ocher decoration, with raised linear motif on the top and bottom section, while raised open-work ridges running down the centre of the base. Associated with th Yina phase of the yam harvest ceremonies. Weathered patina; with minor loss to the last raised ridge. In excellent condition.

Old Kwoma Yina Figure - bf518

An important old Yina figure. Carved from hard dense wood, and decorated with natural pigments and bush resin varnish to give the glossy finish. The deeply recessed face is typical of older Yina figures; and this is a fantastic example. Weathered patina with old slug trails running across the front face and the back of the figure; and remnant feather attachments on the right hand side of the face, confirming that this figure has been used in its context for the Yina cycle of the yam ceremony. In fine condition. Presented on a custom made steel display stand. Circa Early 20th Century.

Old Nepalese Tharu Ancestor Figure - bf158

Tharu Valley, Southern Nepal.

A very old Tharu ancestor figure of the Dang Tharu people of Southern Nepal. Standing on a circular base with the hands clasped in a gesture of prayer. On the back of the figure is a carved serpent which wraps around the body just below the hands. Weathered and encrusted patina, in excellent condition. Circa: late 19th to early 20th Century.
