A large beautifully woven and decorated Southern Highlands Timbawarra figure. Constructed from tightly woven bark fibre in human form and decorated on both sides with baked natural ochre pigment decoration. The pigment displays classic highlands motif and is in great condition. Smoky patina, in truly excellent condition. Circa 1960′s; custom mounted.

Group of 3 Massim Presentation Axe Blades – tc156

A group of three large Massim green stone presentation axe blades. These axe blades were traded or presented as gifts throughout the Massim region and are still to this day highly revered as a form of currency. All are excellent examples with definite age. There are a few small nicks around the edges from time in the field; in otherwise perfect condition. 19th Century; all with custom mounts.

A large old Yangoru cassowary bone fighting dagger. Carved from the femur bone of the cassowary bird. The front side highly decorated with incised abstract motif carved in relief, with two piercings on the top “knuckle” For attachments. Deep glossy patina from extensive handling in excellent condition. Early 20th Century; custom mounted.

Massim Drum Trobriand Islands – tc161

An old Trobriand drum. Slender classic form the elegant curved handle rising from a medial ridge which terminates into two stylised frigate birds on either end, the handle flanked by two stylised fish or possibly grasshoppers. Extending down each side of the drum is classic incised abstract motif, some of which has been worn down from extensive use. The membrane is intact and gives a fantastic sound. Weathered varied patina in excellent condition. Early 20th Century; Unmounted.

Elegant Ramu Avian Food Pounder – tc147

An elegant middle Ramu food pounder. Carved from dark black palm, the handle with a beautiful avian terminal above raised and incised abstract motif. All over glossy patina, the tip of the pounder rounded from extensive use; in perfect condition. Early 20th Century. Our stand maker Arne Groskopff cleverly mounted this to resemble a bird about to launch into flight.

Abelam Figural Cassowary Bone Yam Knife – tc153

An Abelam cassowary bone implement. Said to contain magical powers which aid in the growing of the famous long yams; revered by the Abelam people. Fashioned from the femur bone, and decorated with a single cowrie shell set in resin in the centre, and two classically Abelam ancestral faces peering out from each side of the top. Smooth encrusted handling patina in excellent condition. Mid 20th Century; Custom mounted.

Amphlett Islands Ceramic Taro Pot – tc150

Amphlett Islands, Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea

A fine Amphlett Island ceramic cooking bowl. Used to stew taro and other hard starchy vegetables. Deep elegant form the top rim with incised linear motif and scalloping on the outer edge. The outer surface with curvilinear motif; the inside nicely encrusted from extensive use. All over dark blackened patina from time on the fire; in truly excellent condition. Mid 20th Century presented on a perspex mount.
