Wosera District, East Sepik Province, Papua New GuineaA Wosera figural spear tip. The palm wood stem and tip bearing three smirking faces. The stem of the spear has raised curvilinear motif with a touch of red “trade” paint, most likely a later addition. The tip covered in a kind of natural pigment mixed with tree resin giving a waxy appearance. Weathered and encrusted patina; in excellent condition. Mounted on a custom steel display stand. Louisiade Archipelago, Milne Bay Province, Papua New GuineaAn old Massim decorated lime pot. A large spherical hollowed out gourd complete with its woven bark fibre and pig tusk stopper. Pearl and bagi shell attachments with some small green plastic discs as a substitute for bagi discs. This is a great example and the weave on the stopper is extremely fine and incorporates a rim of bagi attachments around the base of the pigs tusk. The inside still bears some remnant lime. Overall this pieces is in fantastic condition and comes with with a perspex mount. Early 20th Century. Dimensions: 26 x 18 cm or 10.2 x 7 inches. |

Maprik Area, East Sepik Province, Papua New GuineaAn impressive larger Abelam female ancestor figure. Known as a “Yuwibasari” this figure is said to represent women and their contribution towards the Yam planting and harvesting. Carved with great form, and decorated with natural pigments, shell earrings through pierced ears, and human hair attached to the head and genital area. Although not an ancient figure, most likely being carved in the 1980’s; she has fantastic traditional decoration; pierced ears and septum; which you usually only find on older sculpture. A fine looking figure in excellent condition. Mounted on a custom steel display stand. Height: 140 cm or 55 inches. |
