large Central Australian Coolamon. Used by Aboriginal women for a variety of their duties such as; food gathering and preparation, or as a primitive “baby capsule”. Carved from hardwood, with a lovely fluted texture, and decorated with red ochre. Deep warm patina with a traditional spinifex resin repair to a small split on the outer rim. In excellent condition. Circa: 1950′s-60′s.

Old Nepalese Tharu Ancestor Figure – bf158

Tharu Valley, Southern Nepal.

A very old Tharu ancestor figure of the Dang Tharu people of Southern Nepal. Standing on a circular base with the hands clasped in a gesture of prayer. On the back of the figure is a carved serpent which wraps around the body just below the hands. Weathered and encrusted patina, in excellent condition. Circa: late 19th to early 20th Century.

Aibom Sago Storage Pot – bf59

ibom Village, Sepik Region, Papua New Guinea.

An Aibom Village ceramic sago storage pot. Made by women using the “coil technique”; building up coiled bands of clay which are then smoothed down to give the smooth finish. The decorative face is then added. The pots are then baked near open fires or they are simply left to cure under houses. The natural pigment decoration is the last addition. Weathered patina, in excellent conditon. Circa 1960′s.

Classic Middle Sepik Food Hook – bf144

AA Middle Sepik food hook. Well carved from hard wood with the large ancestor head making up the body of the hook and with a narrow stem attaching the hook at the base. Decorated with natural pigments, raised facial details and incised curvilinear motifs around the chin section. Boasting a large pierced septum common with older carvings. Used to suspend bilum bags containing food and other perishables out of the reach of rodents. Collected in the early 1970′s. Weathered patina in wonderful condition.

Rare Papuan Gulf Ubuai Dance Costume – bf78

This amazing Papuan dance costume originates from A’Idio Village. It is similar to the more commonly known Kanipu costume. Representing bush spirits it is worn by young boys at initiation, or to guard “majic” coconuts to be used at ceremonies.
Bark tapa cloth over a cane frame with a grass fiber fringe. Collected in the 1960′s; in great condition.

Fine Lake Sentani Canoe Paddle – bf139

Lake Sentani, West Papua.

An old Lake Sentani canoe paddle; the front and reverse of the blade decorated with abstract motifs carved in relief; and traces of red trade paint. Collected by the Paulian Missionary Society. Weathered patina with two age splits on the blade and a repair to the stem of the handle using bush string, neither detract from the overall appeal. Mid 20th Century.

Wonderful Old Coastal Sepik Amulet Mask – bf116

A beautiful old Coastal Sepik amulet mask. These small masks were attached by a cord to the owner and worn as an amulet or attached to their bilum bag. This particular mask is finely carved with great attention to detail, pierced eyes, with a large pierced septum, and incised motifs on the forehead section of the mask. Weathered and encrusted patina exhibiting great age. Early 20th Century. Presented on a custom made display stand.
